About the course

Delivered by SGS College, this qualification is aimed at learners employed in a teaching assistant role who wish to progress to Higher Level Teaching Assistant status. This work-based qualification is designed for individuals passionate about providing invaluable support in any school or college setting. As the support staff environment continuously evolves, our course has been carefully crafted to encompass the latest skills and knowledge required by teaching assistants, expanding its scope to include new roles and responsibilities.

How is the course delivered and assessed?
Immerse yourself in a dynamic and inclusive learning environment that encourages open dialogue, sharing of ideas, and personal experiences. Our classes, available at our Filton and Stroud campuses, are delivered face-to-face one afternoon per term. Through a diverse range of learning and teaching activities, including group work, discussions, and presentations, you’ll explore different perspectives on the role of a Higher Level Teaching Assistant.
Be prepared to actively participate, contribute to discussions, and engage in various activities to fully maximize your learning experience. To support your studies, you’ll need to be working in a school or college and have a Level 3 qualification in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools (STLS) or two years of experience as a teaching assistant.
Your tutor will also conduct observations during their visits to your workplace. Self-Study tasks, research and school-based projects will be set following each face to face session. Students need to allow around 4-6 hours a week to complete these
What do I need to join (Entry Requirements)
Must be employed as a Teaching Assistant for 15 hours or more per week. Commitment from the school to support your development. Either a Level 3 qualification in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools (STLS) or a minimum of two years’ experience in the role.
