About the course
Kickstart your studies into Animal Care by enrolling onto our brand new L1 Pathways course! Choose your specific pathway in Animal Care and spend time undertaking foundation learning towards your vocational path by studying units such as Caring For and Feeding Animals, Moving and Accommodating Animals and Maintain the Health of Animals. Study essential English, Maths and Employability skills alongside your pathway to ensure you have the best opportunity of progressing into your desired sector.
Course Content
This course is delivered at multiple campuses, each of which is offered slightly differently. Click the relevant campus below for further information.
You will undertake a L1 BTEC qualification in Land Based Studies. A range of teaching methods will be used in the classroom, including: writing, reading, researching, presentations, discussions and case studies. You will go to your Pathway department one day a week and undertake your vocational units with specialised teaching staff from that area. You will complete summative assignments and receive feedback and grades from your teachers throughout.
Once you’ve submitted your application, you’ll be invited to an assessment day where you’ll participate in online assessments for English and Math. This process helps us ensure that this course is the right fit for you and allows us to place you in the most suitable group

Maths & English
A key requirement for future progression and employment is a good understanding and application of knowledge and skills in both English and Maths. Learners who are enrolled on this course will also, as part of their overall programme of study, be enrolled on Functional Skills and/or GCSE English and Maths to progress towards gaining grade 4s in both subjects.
Employability
We aim to provide you with the core skills required to progress into further study, training or employment upon completion of your study programme. Key attributes required by employers are that individuals be enthusiastic, motivated, presentable (in some instances in company uniform), organised, articulate, able to think 'outside the box', business-like and enterprising, and that they have a 'can-do' attitude. We work on all these areas throughout the duration of your programme of study, and your tutor(s) will provide feedback on progress made, as well as areas for development.
What do I need to join
As well as having a keen interest in your pathway and a willingness to learn, learners must possess GCSE grades 2 or 3 in both English and Maths, or achieved at least an Entry level 3 in Functional Skills English and Maths. We will also ask you to complete an intial English and Maths assessment
What can I do next
Learners who successfully complete the Pathways course will be eligible for progression onto a Level 2 programme in that pathway, GCSE Plus or an apprenticeship in a related discipline.
