Functional Skills English is fundamental for success both in personal and professional life. Our course provides a practical approach to study qualifications, enabling you to apply core skills to real-life situations. Through engaging topics tailored to your interests, you’ll develop your reading and writing abilities, harness the power of technology, and actively participate in whole-class activities with personalized support. By enrolling in this course, you’ll have the opportunity to earn a nationally recognised qualification in English. The primary focus is on enhancing your practical communication skills, enabling you to navigate life, learning, and work effectively. Real-life scenarios, including reading and writing instructions, articles, letters, emails, and job applications, will be thoroughly explored. Additionally, practical strategies to improve spelling, punctuation, and grammar will be covered. Our ultimate aim is to equip you with effective communication skills, empowering you to confidently express yourself and engage in independent learning. How will I learn?
Your commitment of just 1.5 – 2.5 hours per week depending on course levels, will be dedicated to attending our engaging weekly lessons. During these sessions, your tutor will assign individual or group work, providing valuable guidance and feedback. At our college, we prioritise self-development and foster an atmosphere conducive to learning.
Entry Requirements
When you enquire about the course, you will be invited to attend an initial Advice, Guidance and Assessment session. Following this, you will have a discussion with one of the English Team, who will provide feedback on your assessment and information on the course you will be offered.

Course Structure: • These courses are primarily classroom-based, led by experienced tutors who are dedicated to your success. • Additionally, our English and Maths Skills Development department offers personalised one-on-one support, Advice, and Guidance specific to English and Maths. Course Fees Part time Adult Functional Skills English course is free if you: • Are over the age of 19 • Have not yet passed GCSE English in grade 4 or C • Have not yet passed English Functional Skills Level 2 • Are UK resident and have lived in the UK in the past 3 years • Are EAA resident or are eligible for the funding. College will ask your residency cards, share code or relevant documents for eligibility check before course starts.
