About the course

If you want to prepare for a technical career working with animals then this course will lay the foundations for your next steps. The study programme will provide you with the technical knowledge and skills required to continue your studies on the level 3 T-Level in Animal Management and Behaviour. It is also a valuable route for mature learners (aged 19+), who do not have the option to undertake the T-Level, providing you with the necessary knowledge and skillset to begin a career in the animal industry

Course content
You will study animal health and welfare, biology, animal feeding and accommodation, animal behaviour, work experience, business management and industry-related health and safety. You will undertake practical sessions in our purpose-built Animal Education Centre and develop important technical skills for working in the animal industry. At the end of the study programme you will achieve a Level 2 Technical Diploma in Animal Care as well as an internal certificate for upskilling and supervisory skills in the animal sector.
What do I need to join
As well as having a keen interest in the natural world and animal management, you will need to possess a minimum of 4 GCSEs at grade 4 or above including science, English and maths. Learners will need to be committed, punctual and demonstrate an enthusiasm for learning and taking on new ideas and skills.
What can I do next
Upon successful completion of this study programme you will be ready to progress onto the T-Level in Animal Management and Behaviour. Alternatively, you may wish to progress directly into the animal industry and may be able to secure an entry level position or apprenticeship within the industry in such organisations as zoological collections, farm parks, animal boarding establishments and dog grooming salons. Mature learners will also be encouraged to pursue Access to HE courses to pave the way to their next steps in Higher Education. Careers advice and guidance will be available throughout your time at SGS from our experienced team of Careers Advisors and Work Coaches.
