If you have a passion for make-up or strong artistic abilities, this specialist qualification will provide you with the knowledge, skills and understanding needed for employment in the creative industries or further degree study. By combining make-up artistry with creative art practice, this course allows you to express your creativity through projects that are closely aligned with real industry careers and contexts.
Delivered in professional make-up studios and art workshops, the course offers opportunities for collaboration with learners and experts across media make-up and other creative disciplines within the College. You will be encouraged to explore, experiment and gain confidence in your craft while using research, idea generation and reflection to respond meaningfully to projects that are purpose-driven and audience-focused.
The course consists of a diverse range of make-up projects, covering various creative contexts. You will develop advanced art and design techniques while producing make-up looks for a variety of settings, ranging from editorial and fashion photography to avant-garde, casualty FX and prosthetics and character make-up and hair designs for stage and screen.
As you progress into the second year (Extended Diploma), you'll have the opportunity to specialise your skills, focusing on the areas that interest you the most.
At least four grade 4s or above including an English or Maths GCSE at grade 4 or above plus a portfolio of recent work to show at Taster Day

A relevant Level 2 Diploma and an English or Maths GCSE at grade 4 or above (or Functional Skill Level 1 or above)
The progression and career opportunities for learners completing this course are both diverse and flexible, providing pathways to higher education and various creative careers.
The qualification offers a solid foundation in make-up artistry, with skills developed - such as problem-solving, critical thinking, and practical application - being highly transferable.
You may choose to pursue degree studies in Specialist Make-up Design, start your career in entry-level roles within the industry, join a studio or professional organisation or work freelance. This course prepares you for a range of opportunities in the creative sector.
Please note that this course is currently under review by the Department for Education as part of a national qualifications evaluation. While we hope to offer this course in the upcoming academic year, its availability may be subject to change following the conclusion of the review in December 2024. Should this course be unavailable, an equivalent course will be offered.
