Discover the exciting world of ceramics in our Beginners Ceramics course led by the talented Gina Baum. Through hands-on workshops and demonstrations, you will learn various techniques for creating decorative surfaces, experimenting with slips, glazes, and colours. The course covers hand-building, throwing, glazing, and alternative firing processes.

How will I learn?

Under Gina's guidance, you will have the opportunity to develop your skills through short demonstrations and practical workshops. The course encourages exploration of historical and contemporary influences, with suggested research as "homework." Our well-stocked library and classroom offer a wide selection of specialist books and magazines to support your learning journey. Access to electric kilns for earthenware and gas-fired kilns for stoneware will enhance your ceramic experiences.

Entry Requirements

No prior experience is necessary for this beginner-level course. Gina will closely monitor your progress and provide technical guidance throughout the workshops. To make the most of your learning experience, it is recommended to bring a notebook or sketchbook for recording ideas and glazing details, as well as a protective shirt for hands-on work. Applicants must be at least 19 years of age at the start of the academic year, to attend this course

Additional Information

In addition to the course fee, learners will also be charged a separate weigh and pay fee, for the items that they make. This fee covers the use of the kiln and is based on the weight of the item(s) that have been made during the course. This cost varies from a few pounds to a £100 plus. Below are the current charges for the different clays used: Specialist Clays (Porcelain, Paper-Clay, Black clays) = £7 per Kg Utility Clays (Smooth White S/W, St Thomas S/W, Crank, White E/W, Red E/W) = £6 per Kg Lustre: Will incur and addition cost of £2 per piece of work A more detailed breakdown can be supplied on request.

Over 19s on Full-Time or Part-Time courses usually have materials, exams and tuition fees to pay.
