Summary
This Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science is intended for those learners who have an interest in the science behind sport and its applied understanding. The qualification allows you to study a wide range of areas within the sports science field, giving you an insight into applied research and functional anatomy, thus better informing your next steps and your career choices. This 2-year course has been tailored to give learners an opportunity to progress onto Higher Education Sports programmes. This is a full-time course.
The Level 3 programme is made up of units, that are a mix of theory and practical work.
This course will cover some of the units below:
- Applied Sport and Exercise Psychology
- Functional Anatomy
- Applied Research Methods in Sport Science
- Coaching for Performance and Fitness
If a learner is interested in studying physiotherapy as their higher education pathway, the six human biology units we teach at SGS are:
- Functional anatomy
- Physiology
- Sports massage
- Field and lab based fitness testing
- Biomechanics
- Nutrition
Qualification Size and UCAS Points
This BTEC qualification is equivalent to 3 A-Levels, giving the learner the opportunity to achieve a maximum of 168 UCAS points.
How do the Sports Academies work alongside this course?
Learners are able to access Sports Academies whilst studying at SGS College on a full-time course. Your academic studies and academy training work as a partnership, and as such, are never timetabled at the same time. This allows you to continue your development within your selected sporting discipline, whilst studying in an academic area that interests you. For example, a learner may have lectures on a Monday morning and then Academy training at WISE on a Monday afternoon.
How will I know how I am doing?
Learners are given regular feedback to support their understanding of the subject’s topic areas, whilst also receiving feedback to aid the continued development of their numeracy and literacy skills.
What do I need to join?
Applicants will hold a total of 5 GCSE grade 5’s, including English, maths and science.
How will I learn?
This Level 3 course is based at our dynamic and exciting WISE Campus, located within easy reach of the city of Bristol and moments away from Bristol Parkway and Filton Abbey Wood train stations.
We will assess this qualification through 60% coursework and 40% external exams ran by BTEC. The coursework assessment methods we will use include written assignments, presentations, discussions and practical assessment of skills.Previous work
Maths & English
Although no additional English and maths qualifications will be taken during this course, we aim to embed these essential skills into all of our lectures, giving learners the opportunity to further evolve and develop these important attributes.
Employability
Possible careers and salaries (after completion of Higher Education courses) include:
Sports Physiotherapist - £23,000 to £45,000 depending upon experienceSports Scientist - £18,000 to £60,000 depending upon experience
Sports Analyst - £25,000 to £48,000 depending upon experience Average yearly salary data taken from the National Careers Services website
Work Experience
Every learner at SGS College is tasked with achieving a number of work experience hours during the academic year. We suggest the learner starts to consider their work experience placement at the earliest opportunity.
The work experience element of the course is imperative as it provides the learner with vital insight into possible roles within the industry. Each of our courses has a high amount of employer engagement, with the aim to expose the learner to possible destinations once the qualification has been completed. Is it these experiences and engagements that allow our learners to develop holistically and to become industry ready.What can I do next?
A high majority of our learner’s progress onto Higher Education Sport programmes. Following the successful completion of this qualification, learners could also apply for industry apprenticeships in the related field.
