Covid Update

On Tuesday 29 March, the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Sajid Javid, set out the next steps for living with COVID-19 in England from Friday 1 April.

Updated guidance advises:

  • Adults with the symptoms of a respiratory infection, and who have a high temperature or feel unwell, should try to stay at home and avoid contact with other people until they feel well enough to resume normal activities and no longer have a high temperature.
  • Children and young people who are unwell and have a high temperature should stay at home and avoid contact with other people. They can return to college when they no longer have a high temperature, and are well enough to attend.
  • Adults with a positive COVID-19 test result should try to stay at home and avoid contact with other people for 5 days, which is when they are most infectious. For children and young people aged 18 and under, the advice is 3 days.

For education and childcare settings from Friday 1 April:

  • Regular asymptomatic testing is no longer recommended in any education or childcare setting, including in SEND, alternative provision and children’s social care settings. Therefore, we will no longer be able to order test kits .

Statement on the Situation in Israel, Gaza, and the Middle East

South Gloucestershire & Stroud College (SGS) is deeply moved by the events taking place in Israel, Gaza, and the Middle East.

We stand in solidarity with those members of our community personally affected and extend our thoughts to all enduring hardships. We understand that the situation is distressing, especially for those worried about their loved ones. We empathize with everyone affected, emphasizing that SGS College firmly stands against antisemitism, Islamophobia, or prejudice against any religion.

To our staff and students: SGS recognizes the emotional toll of recent incidents, especially on our staff and students connected to the region. We have numerous support systems and personnel available for comfort, advice, and assistance. We urge anyone in our College community, or those impacted by global conflicts, to seek help when needed. We are actively reaching out to those affected to provide welfare and support, committed to ensuring the well-being of our entire community as the situation progresses. We will remain vigilant, adjusting our information and response as the situation evolves.

Addressing Harassment: SGS asserts that there is no room for antisemitism, Islamophobia, or intolerance towards any faith. Harassment or discrimination will not be tolerated. We expect everyone—staff, students, visitors, and contractors—to treat one another with respect and kindness. If any community member experiences harassment, they are encouraged to report to the local police, utilise the College's internal grievance procedures, and seek assistance and guidance through the College's welfare services.

The College operates a Freedom of Expression policy, which outlines what is acceptable behaviour, however the College will not tolerate any expression, statement or speech which uses threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour, either intending to stir up hatred or unrest or where hatred or unrest is likely to be stirred up. This includes for example, making inflammatory public speeches or posting racist comments on social media websites
