Covid Update

On Tuesday 29 March, the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Sajid Javid, set out the next steps for living with COVID-19 in England from Friday 1 April.

Updated guidance advises:

  • Adults with the symptoms of a respiratory infection, and who have a high temperature or feel unwell, should try to stay at home and avoid contact with other people until they feel well enough to resume normal activities and no longer have a high temperature.
  • Children and young people who are unwell and have a high temperature should stay at home and avoid contact with other people. They can return to college when they no longer have a high temperature, and are well enough to attend.
  • Adults with a positive COVID-19 test result should try to stay at home and avoid contact with other people for 5 days, which is when they are most infectious. For children and young people aged 18 and under, the advice is 3 days.

For education and childcare settings from Friday 1 April:

  • Regular asymptomatic testing is no longer recommended in any education or childcare setting, including in SEND, alternative provision and children’s social care settings. Therefore, we will no longer be able to order test kits .

SGS College Celebrates the Launch of SGS Create: A Cutting-Edge 14-16 Centre

The official opening, held on Wednesday, October 11, brought together the new cohort of Create learners, parents, governors, council members, and key stakeholders to celebrate this important milestone focused on a forward-thinking approach to learning.

Special guest of honour was former SGS learner Oliver Bruce, who officially opened the centre. Oliver is an entrepreneur, podcaster, investor, and CEO of PinPoint Media, a tech-driven content marketing agency. His unconventional educational journey, marked by challenges like ADHD, Dyslexia, and Dyspraxia, has fuelled his advocacy for more adaptable and accessible education.

Oliver believes that College was where genuine education took place for him, away from the rigidity of the school system.

SGS Principal Sara-Jane Watkins commented,

"We are delighted to celebrate the opening of SGS Create and are immensely grateful to everyone who played a part in making this important and much-needed provision a reality. With this new centre, young people have the opportunity to thrive and truly enjoy their education."

SGS would like to extend their thanks to Gloucestershire County Council and Stroud District Council, expressing gratitude for their invaluable support. Kate Hartshorn, Project Manager, comments,

"We have had the privilege of working closely with the Education Inclusion Service and SEND Sufficiency & Development Service since the development stages of SGS Create and kindly agreed to sit on our early intervention panels to discuss applications for SGS Create. This partnership is unique compared to other full-time 14-16 provisions within colleges and has proven to be a huge success in ensuring the right learners are enrolled at SGS Create and given the right learning environment and support."

The self-contained 14-16 Centre is based within the existing Stroud campus. The meticulously planned layout incorporates natural elements, including abundant natural light, to cultivate a calming atmosphere that fosters concentration and creativity. The successful completion of the construction project was made possible through the generous external funding provided by Stroud District Council's Community Infrastructure Levy.

Environment Committee Chair, Councillor Chloe Turner, said:

"We are delighted to support the 14-16 SGS Create Centre. Its innovative approach encourages inclusivity, especially for the vocational sectors, which are an important part of the Stroud economy. A key part of the Council's Plan is to ensure that new housing is sustainable. We are carefully investing funding to provide the facilities and services that people need, such as educational facilities, leisure services, roads, and environmental improvements."

SGS Create is set to empower learners, challenge traditional educational norms, and foster an environment where students can thrive.
