College students teach sport to local primary school children

This semester, level 3 Sports students from SGS College’s Stroud Campus have left the classroom to deliver sports sessions at Callowell Primary School in Stroud.

The learners aged 16-18 have successfully planned and delivered sports sessions for year 5 and 6 pupils at Callowell. Taking place on a weekly basis from April 2014 through to May, 2014 the students have taken on this daunting task as part of their sports studies; to gain vocational experience.

Pupils at the school have really enjoyed having the students in to teach them and members of staff at the school have been impressed with the impact the students have made. Wayne Bown, Deputy Head Teacher at Callowell Primary School said: ‘’The SGS students have impressed us here at Callowell. It’s been a really positive experience for our children. The sports sessions have been well organised, fun and the children have developed their skills.’’

Sports lecturer at SGS College, Mark Davis, added: “This has provided the students with valuable hands on vocational experience in the areas of sports coaching and teaching in primary schools; something that will be appreciated by University and employers alike.’’
