SGS Alumni filmmaker is sweeping film awards

SGS Alumni filmmaker Dionne Edwards’ recent short film ‘We Love Moses’ is sweeping the film awards and garnering critical acclaim both sides of the Atlantic. US TV channel HBO will be screening it from Friday 9th February as part of US Black History month, and streaming on HBO Now and HBO Go.

The film, set in London, is a coming of age story about a teenage black girl and her obsession with her brother’s best friend. Shot in 2016, from a script Dionne wrote more than 10 years ago, and made with funding from Film London. Since its premiere at the London film festival in October 2016 the film has created a stir and is gathering a clutch of awards from Bristol’s Encounters Film Festival award for best live action short to a recent Best Short award from the London Critics Circle. Dionne has travelled the globe promoting her film in festivals this past year and a half, from Miami to Toronto, to Bristol and it still keeps gathering momentum. Next step for Dionne is developing a script for a feature.

Her former tutor at SGS College Michelle Hughes says of Dionne “we spotted her talent for writing when she was a level three media student. Her scripts were very mature for her age, and in them you could see the promise of the filmmaker she would become. I was so convinced that she would achieve her goal of being a writer and director that before she left college to go to University I asked her to sign a couple of her scripts - which I still have.”
