Specialist make-up techniques
On Thursday 5th February Make-up Students from the Level 3 Theatrical & Media Make course at Filton were involved in making up actors to simulate illnesses at Southmead Hospital Education Unit. They used specialist make-up techniques for 3 simulations of having a heart attack, having liver disease, and someone with a post-operative scar become infected causing septicaemia. The actors were then filmed and photographed to be used in medical staff training exercises at the hospital, to recognise symptoms and make an accurate diagnosis. The students really enjoyed this experience, appreciating the medical expertise of staff to advise them on accurate symptoms so they could create great make-ups. They did a fantastic job. As their tutor I was very proud to watch them develop their skills from their practice in class with myself to the finished result produced in such a professional way at the hospital. The hospital staff offered high praise for the professionalism of the students and the fantastic make-up they produced. This has been a fantastic experience for all involved and we hope to link with the hospital again in the near future.
